Renowned textbook author visits MacTEACH program

The MacTEACH peer tutoring and outreach program at MacArthur High School received a special visit from author John Seidlitz. He is the writer behind many textbooks related to promoting academic language development for English Language Learners (ELL).

Seidlitz first visited with students involved in MacTEACH during their Neighbor-to-Neighbor tutoring program last spring. On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Seidlitz joined MacTEACH in the MacArthur Library to offer the same professional teaching and development strategies he provides educators across the country.

During this three-hour session, the tutors took on the roles of Italian Language Learners. This allowed them to experience the struggles and frustrations ELL students go through first hand. Senior Lindsay Kutac, lead tutor for the MacTEACH Oak Grove Elementary School Tutoring program, says this session made an impact.

“This was really eye-opening,” said Kutac. “While these strategies are geared toward ELL’s, I can see how they can be applied in many classrooms because it’s all about taking the time to pay attention to student growth needs.”
