NETS student embraces new opportunities

A smiling RJ holds his certificateCongratulations to NETS student Robert "RJ" Villarreal!

RJ recently earned his Food Handler’s Certificate while working alongside the North East ISD School Nutrition Services Department. Gaining this certificate will give him the opportunity to work in a variety of food service industries in the community.

NETS stands for North East Transition Services. This community-based program serves NEISD students between the ages of 18 – 21 with disabilities who have completed high school and are seeking the support skills necessary for adult life. That includes anything from training on how to use public transportation, assistance with career development or guidance on how to live in an apartment setting.

The partnership between NETS and School Nutrition Services is providing opportunities to expand post-secondary pathways for our students. For RJ, that meant learning from the best in the Woodstone Elementary School cafeteria.

“Our students are placed at various District and community job placements based on their post-secondary goals for employment,” said Special Education Director Lorena Gonzalez. “This collaborative partnership has paved the way for equity and opportunities where students of all abilities are able to interact with peers, staff, and community members in a meaningful manner.”

Way to go, RJ!
