Igniting a love of learning

North East ISD Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Behavior Coach Meghan Leach is loving summer school.

“I am just really happy to be here with these seven children.”

Every student in her class at Serna Elementary School is from the Congo. For two of them, this is their first time in a U.S. classroom.

“What a great opportunity to ignite that love of school,” said Leach. “I think it is super important to help our newcomers feel welcome and safe and a part of our school community.”

The students in her class are all part of NEISD’s Newcomer Program. The program is for refugees or asylees and provides a safe learning environment for the students to begin acclimating to U. S. schools.

Leach gets to help these students work on their English, develop social skills and get ready for the next school year. She loves watching the students’ transformations.

“I hope they enjoy being here,” said Leach. “I hope they feel seen. I hope they feel loved. I hope they feel capable. I just really like being here with them.”
