“This doesn’t feel like work to me.”

Ernie Jacinto holds #theNEISDway in his summer school classroomFUN is the first word that comes to mind when you step inside Ernesto Jacinto’s summer school classroom at Coker Elementary School. After a few minutes with his kindergarten class, you’d be hard-pressed to decide who’s having more fun – the kids or ‘Mr. J.’

“I know I’m working, but this doesn’t feel like work to me,” said Jacinto. “I’m having so much fun. I’m almost kicking myself that I didn’t do this sooner.”

This summer, you’ll find Jacinto at Coker decked out in bright colors, rocking a festive headband or necklace. Last year, he started a new career as a Special Education teacher at Hidden Forest Elementary School. Jacinto is a former Occupational Therapist who was looking for a change. He found it in the classroom, along with a renewed sense of purpose.

“Anyone who knows me would probably say I’m silly and super goofy. I’m a big kid at heart, so I feel like I can be me here. Already, teaching has been beyond my wildest dreams and expectations.”

Making a career change wasn’t an easy decision but following his instincts led Jacinto where he was destined to be. He’s already making an impact with his big heart and commitment to being a positive role model for every student he interacts with.

“I know they’re watching how I treat people and being a gentler, softer person, I think it’s important to have a role model like that around,” said Jacinto. “I want them to understand what hard work is and what you need to do to accomplish your goals. If delivering that message in a goofy, kind of quirky way works, then we’re a match made in heaven.”

It doesn’t matter which campus he’s on, Jacinto is a natural in any classroom. And now he’s thriving in the second career he never expected.
