Fighting food insecurity one meal at a time

Members of the Hunger Awareness Club smile with the Tuscany Heights Cafeteria ManagerThe Hunger Awareness Club is fighting food insecurity one meal at a time.

“We’re trying to shed light on an issue that hits close to home for a lot of our neighbors, students and classmates,” said Reagan High School senior Giselle Kaderabek. “I’m very proud to be part of something like this.”

The group is less than a year old, but it already has more than 40 members. Kaderabek was inspired to start the club after a service project at the Children’s Hunger Fund. While volunteering, she learned more about the reality of food insecurity across Bexar County.

“That really resonated with us. So, we decided to start at a smaller scale and start where our feet are in our own community.”

Tuscany Heights Elementary School is a special part of Kaderabek’s community. She attended school there and reached out to principal Tara Bailey to ask if club members could help hand out meals this summer.

“I was able to reach out to Mrs. Bailey, who I remember from fifth grade, and let her know about our club. Helping with curbside meals here felt like it was the right place at the right time for us.”

No matter the zip code, food insecurity is a reality in every community. Thank you to The Hunger Awareness Club for doing their part and showing how #NEISDcares.
