NEISD Board of Trustees approves nearly $10 million in raises

The North East ISD Board of Trustees approved nearly $10 million in raises for teachers and staff during a special board meeting Thursday, June 24.

NEISD trustees and administration wanted to show their appreciation for all the hard work NEISD teachers and employees put into one of the toughest years in education. The board and executive staff will continue to look for ways to boost compensation in the future, but with enrollment down and an uncertain future ahead, the District is committed to ensuring the compensation plan is viable.

“We always have a goal in mind to give the very best that we can today, but looking in the future,” said Dr. Sean Maika, NEISD Superintendent of Schools. “Would I love to recommend bigger raises? Absolutely, but I am a taxpayer too. I have to always go to bed at night and close my eyes with both in mind.”

Compensation Breakdown:

    •  Increase the starting salary for teachers and librarians with zero years of experience to $54,250

    • For eligible bus drivers, custodians, food service assistants, special education assistants and instructional assistants further adjust starting pay to align with the market and provide a corresponding general pay increase of at least 3% based on the midpoint of the new 2021-22 pay scales to current incumbents to alleviate compression
    • For all other eligible classified employees, grant a 3% general pay increase based on the midpoint of the new 2021-22 pay scales
    • Retention Supplement:
If and when ESSER funds are received and other budgetary conditions permit, as determined by the
Superintendent in conjunction with District staff, the District would like to provide a one-time retention
supplement for employees during the 2021-22 school year. This supplement, if provided, would be outside any employment contract and only applies to the 2021-22 school year.
Any such retention shall be paid in accordance with criteria approved by the Superintendent.
