Former Leopard makes 'Rowdy' return to Larkspur

Author Chris Mullen holds his Larkspur backpack and book RowdyA familiar road brought back a flood of memories for author Chris Mullen.

"I was in San Antonio that day visiting another school," said Mullen. "As I'm driving around, I start to realize this area looks really familiar to me. I happened to come upon Larkspur Drive and I thought, 'no way!' so I took a left and there it was."

Mullen attended Larkspur Elementary School as a child. While it looks a little different today, its spirit remains. Once he stepped on campus, the memories came rushing back.

"Larkspur honestly was probably fate all along. We really had no intention of moving to San Antonio in the first place except to be closer to Fort Sam Houston Medical Center because I had a procedure done when I was in second and third grade. So, this third-grade class is really important to me because I had to miss a significant amount of time in the winter to be in the hospital to recover."

The Mullen family moved to Seguin after Chris recovered. He went on to attend Texas A&M University and teach elementary school for years. The idea for his award-winning Young Adult novel, "Rowdy: Wild and Mean, Sharp and Keen" was born inside the classroom.

Today, Chris is spreading Rowdy's message of battling the odds and overcoming obstacles in the Old West with elementary students across the state. He did just that during his stop at Larkspur. He's also hoping to inspire a few aspiring writers along the way with author visits and engaging writing workshops.

"I want to give them an example of how I attack the story and let them know that they can do this and here are the tools you can use to make it happen."
