Chance encounter inspires Diabetes Awareness Month campaign

A chance encounter inspired the entire Ridgeview Elementary School campus to give back to a very special little girl living with diabetes. Bilingual reading teacher Maria Sepulveda met Anaiah at a farmer’s market earlier this month. Sepulveda is part of Ridgeview’s Wellness Committee, and couldn’t help but ask about her t-shirt that read, “In November We Wear Blue.”

That’s when Anaiah revealed she was spreading awareness about her battle with diabetes during Diabetes Awareness Month.

“When I asked what the blue stood for she explained it to me in the most adorable way,” said Sepulveda. “I made an instant connection [with her] because my grandmother had diabetes and now my mom does.”

The connection between Sepulveda and Anaiah turned into a budding friendship. When Sepulveda told her colleagues she wanted to do something to help her new friend, the teachers and staff at Ridgeview all pitched in to help. Their goal of raising $200 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of San Antonio has now topped more than $500.

On Thursday, Nov. 19, Anaiah visited Ridgeview wearing blue to thank them for their support.
