Choosing the Best Journey Program Overview

NEISD adopted and utilizes the Choosing the Best Journey program for high school students. It is a research-based, medically accurate,
abstinence-centered sexual risk avoidance approach that strongly promotes abstinence (delaying sex, ideally until marriage) as the best and healthiest choice. The curriculum uses a teaching approach that moves students from an understanding of the facts to a personal awareness that leads to changed behavior.

Lessons include the following segments: video or case study, discussion, presentation, activities, personal application, and parental involvement through interviews.

The program consists of nine lessons, structured to be taught over ten 45-minutes class periods in high school health credit courses, including Principles of Health Science.

Topics include:
○ anatomy,
○ puberty,

○ goal-setting,
○ decision-making,
○ healthy relationships,
○ risks associated with sexual activity,
○ the benefits and limitations of contraception (but always in the context  of promoting abstinence as the healthiest choice),
○ refusal skills, and
○ character building.
