NEISD Board of Trustees has selected a new name for Robert E. Lee High School

The North East ISD Board of Trustees has selected a new name for Robert E. Lee High School. The school will be known as Legacy of Educational Excellence and will be referred to as LEE High School beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.

At the Oct. 9 regular board meeting, Trustees spoke in open session and listened to public comments. A big factor in the decision was the potential cost to the community, tax payers, and parents.

“Depending on the new name, the cost to the District could be extensive,” said Shannon Grona, President of the NEISD School Board. “The marquee, signs around campus, the end zone, all of the athletic uniforms, dance, cheer and band uniforms, etc. As a Trustee, it is our responsibility to be fiscally responsible. We can minimize the number of things that need to be changed at the school.”

The Board first voted to change the name of Lee High School on Aug. 29. Then, from Sept. 19-25, the District provided an online submission form on its website for the community to submit suggestions for the new name.

The community provided 2,443 submissions. Of those, only 542 met the Board’s criteria. The Board carefully considered all eligible names and decided on a name that was wholesome and will stand the test of time.

District administration will now decide on colors and the mascot. A full report will be given at a board meeting in the near future.

For now, the Robert E. Lee High School name will remain in place through the remainder of the 2017-2018 school year.

Current seniors who graduate in 2018 will receive a Robert E. Lee High School diploma.
