Coming Soon: NEISD featured in military student documentary

Dr. Maika being interviewed for ViewpointNorth East ISD’s work alongside the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) has resulted in an award-winning Student 2 Student program. This initiative connects civilian students on every secondary campus with newly enrolled military children. Together, they tour the campus, eat lunch together, help with homework and answer questions that come with moving to a new place.

Student 2 Student is a renowned program that’s found great results. NEISD will soon be featured in a documentary called Viewpoint, narrated by actor Dennis Quaid. The film will focus on the importance of serving military-connected students.

Dr. Sean Maika, NEISD Superintendent of Schools, will appear in the documentary. He discussed the impact of Student 2 Student, future plans for the program and the value of the District’s partnership with MCEC.

“Military children are routinely being uprooted and moved to new cities. Schools don’t operate the same at every campus. They’re unique communities, just like cities. Student 2 Student helps them find that friendly face to make a personal connection as soon as they arrive.”

NEISD is home to 11 Purple Star Designation campuses. This is a special designation awarded by the Texas Education Agency to schools that excel in meeting the needs of military students and their families.

The Student 2 Student program is currently at every NEISD middle and high school and will soon be at every elementary school.

Viewpoint will be released this fall and will be viewed by more than 10 million people across the country.
