Every day is Earth Day at NEISD’s first ‘green school’

The first ‘green’ campus in Bexar County is embracing what makes it special on Earth Day.

“Cibolo Green is really lucky because our community supports our program and they follow a lot of those safe practices like recycling and making healthy lifestyle choices,” said Sergio Guerrero, Cibolo Green SPED teacher.

Cibolo Green Elementary School is a model for energy conservation and environmental design. While their commitment is a serious one – it’s also really fun. On Earth Day, kindergarten students showed off their fiesta-inspired floats designed with recyclable materials and “green” messaging while the whole school cheered them on.

“You’ll see a lot of the floats in the parade include recycled materials like toilet paper rolls or broken toys that they don’t play with anymore,” said Guerrero.

Cibolo Green was designed with a number of sustainable and environmental features. The campus opened in 2010 with recycled glass tiles in the halls and drinking fountain areas. Windows on campus were made to reduce energy usage and encourage natural lighting. The building structure itself was made with natural Texas sedimentary rock called Cordova Shell.

Each grade level embraces a unique aspect of energy conservation and design in the classroom. Kindergarten is home to Site Sustainability, first grade focuses on Indoor Environmental Quality, second grade tackles Materials and Resources, third grade learns about Water Efficiency, fourth grade takes on Energy and Atmosphere, and fifth grade covers Design and Innovation.

Cibolo Green is also a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified campus with a Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
