Preparing students for life after Churchill

“I love the aspect of being in a child’s life and witnessing the light bulb moment.”

That’s Churchill High School Human Services teacher Chassie Bentley’s favorite part of teaching.

“A lot of time in career and tech, we have that light bulb moment when they talk about what they want to do after high school,” said Bentley. “I like preparing them for whatever is after high school, and I like giving them skills, so they are successful.”

Bentley teaches Human Services at Churchill. That covers a wide variety of classes and skills that can be used in the next step of a student's educational journey.

“It’s really a good class to have under your belt just to see if it’s something you want to get into because it’s a good introductory to different pathways and different industries,” said Bentley. “You’re learning about your taxes. You’re learning about payroll. You’re learning different things that government regulates in business. You are learning how to properly write an email. You are learning how to properly communicate verbally and non-verbally with others. You are learning how to be creative and how it can apply to an industry, a job or a career.”

Human Services give students a glimpse at careers like culinary arts, fashion design, cosmetology and teaching. Students experience hands-on training and cooperative group lessons to give them an opportunity to see what their future career could look like.

“Our Human Service kids get to do different hands-on projects, such as designing businesses. They do store fronts and design actual stores,” said Bentley. “They do projects with dollars and cents where they do a budget for a family of four. Our projects tend to be things they can use in any industry they go into.”
