During this coronavirus campus closure, individuals and families have shown their support and stepped up in a variety of ways. One of those families is the Reyes family. Despite not having children in the North East ISD, Chris and Nadia Reyes appreciate the programs the District offers its students and community. Chris owns CNM Welding and decided to use his expertise to help NEISD’s McKinney-Vento project, a program that supports the District’s homeless student population.
“I experienced food insecurity as a child,” said Chris. “The thought of knowing of a child going through the same experience breaks my heart.”
Chris started welding small metal hearts and offering them up to anyone who would donate to the cause. He called it Hearts for Humanity. The goal of raising a few hundred dollars was quickly surpassed. The Reyes family raised $2,000. They used that money to purchase H-E-B gift cards and recently dropped them off.
“We know one of the McKinney liaisons and have heard stories on how the program has helped local students and their families,” said Nadia. “We hope families can get access to groceries and we also would like to encourage others to donate to the local food banks to help others.”
