The AVID program, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is placing North East ISD students on a fast track to college. New 2018-2019 data shows that 95 percent of NEISD seniors in the AVID program completed a FASFA application, compared to the national rate of 61 percent. Additionally, 99 percent of NEISD AVID students applied to a four-year college and 95 percent were accepted. Nationally, 81 percent of high school students aspire to earn a bachelor’s degree while less than 50 percent actually enroll at a four-year university.
“We are very excited to see these results as we know that a majority of AVID students will be the first generation in their family to attend college," said Dr. Sean Maika, NEISD Superintendent of Schools. "North East ISD has 22 AVID campuses each with dedicated AVID Coordinators and site teams that develop plans to support the AVID mission through writing and reading, critical thinking, teamwork and organization. This is a coordinated team effort and we are proud of our AVID students and staff. Their dedication, determination and perseverance, are truly inspirational.”
Research shows that applying for financial aid is one of the best predictors of whether a student will enroll in college. Through the AVID program, the District hosts regular FAFSA application nights and provides dedicated in-school time for students to work with teachers and staff to complete their applications, providing them with better insight into the financial resources available to them.
NEISD joins more than 7,000 K-12 schools and districts across 47 states that partner with AVID to build a safe and open culture, high expectations for teachers and students, and collaboration in all classrooms.
