NEISD seniors qualify for AlamoPROMISE program

The AlamoPROMISE Scholar Program is making college more accessible and affordable for students at two North East ISD high schools. Seniors at Roosevelt and LEE are part of the first phase of San Antonio-area high schools that are eligible for the AlamoPROMISE, which ensures that tuition and mandatory fees are covered.

The program also covers the gap between financial aid and the cost of tuition for up to three years. LEE senior Timothy Martinez plans on continuing his education at San Antonio College next year. He says it’s comforting to know this new initiative will save him and his family on college expenses.

“It feels really good to know that I can basically go to college for free,” said Martinez. “I want to be a firefighter so I’m going to get my basics done at San Antonio College. It’s nice to have so much support. It’s not as hard on us when we don’t have to do everything by ourselves.”

In order to become an AlamoPROMISE Scholar, the student must be a graduating senior at one of the 25 participating high schools in 2020 and a Bexar County resident eligible for in-district tuition. Household income is not a disqualifying factor. Through this initiative, students can earn a certificate or associate’s degree at one of the five Alamo Colleges at a low cost. Those colleges include Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, San Antonio College and St. Philips College.

By the fall of 2021, the AlamoPROMISE program will be available to students graduating with a diploma from an additional 20 participating high schools. Click here to learn more about the program.
