Roosevelt cadets weigh their military options

JROTC cadets at Roosevelt High School are weighing their options for the future, and for some that includes enlisting in the military. The Rough Rider Battalion invited representatives from the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and National Guard to share information and answer questions about their programs. Cadet Aliyah Macon was excited to learn more about the Marine Corps.

“I have decided to choose the Marine Corps because it’s mentally and physically challenging and I like to challenge myself,” said Macon. “My definition of a challenge is to think you can’t do something but you know you can, and to push yourself to your limits.”

So far, three Roosevelt cadets have chosen to enlist in the U.S. Army National Guard as juniors. They will have a “split training option,” meaning they can attend Basic Combat Training the summer between their junior and senior years. Cadet Maurice Hyson chose this option because it’s a way he can serve others and work part-time during school.

“I have chosen to go into the National Guard because it’s not a full-time job,” said Hyson. “I can still go to school while being in the National Guard. The thing that really made the branch sound perfect for me was the fact that I could help people when there is a national disaster.”
