Reagan journalism teacher to receive Rising Star Award

Each year the Journalism Education Association (JEA) recognizes 12 teachers from across the country with its Rising Star Award. This year, Erin Gallegos will represent San Antonio, Reagan High School, and North East ISD on the national stage as a Rising Star Award recipient.

Gallegos brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the students who take her journalism, yearbook and communications classes at Reagan. She spent the first decade of her career working in network-level broadcast productions. Gallegos’ unusual transition to teaching high school journalism and media classes stemmed from her experience teaching math to elementary school students. She also taught English to kindergarten, secondary and college students while doing humanitarian work in Russia.

Gallegos has helped write journalism curriculum and has shared those plans with others so they can develop their own programs. The JEA will recognize Erin Gallegos with a Rising Star Award during a ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 23. Rising Star trophies are presented to advisers who are in their first five years of advising a school media program, have shown dedication to scholastic journalism and have had success advising at least one media program. Congratulations Erin!
