Commissioner Morath visits Olmos

The Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath made a special visit to Olmos Elementary School on Friday, May 24. His tour of the campus started with the LEE High School cluster principals who were also meeting at Olmos that morning. Informing the Commissioner about this group and providing a brief opportunity for introductions demonstrated how leaders plan across feeder patterns in our District. From there, the tour moved to a meeting area where Principal Gaila Booth could provide a 10-minute history of Olmos to include her changing demographics and student performance.

“I think this is a great opportunity for the Commissioner of Education to see how well-rounded our District is, and how much our campus is supported, and what North East does for every child,” said Booth. “Our District is embracing the changing demographics, and we are always looking to find ways to ensure that all kids are receiving a quality education.  What seems impossible becomes possible when you are an Olmos Owl.”

Commissioner Morath was able to visit classrooms that included the Accelerated Math, Bilingual, and Special Education co-teach classrooms.

“The Commissioner has made a real effort since he came into his role to get to every region in the state to really understand what is happening in our public schools,” said Jeff Goldhorn, Executive Director of Education Service Center, Region 20. “I hope that the Commissioner will see the great progress Olmos has made. This is primarily because of teacher talent and leadership talent at this school.”
