MacArthur High School JROTC cadets and computer science students kicked off the first round of play in the CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense competition on Friday, Nov. 2. CyberPatriot challenges middle and high school students around the country to find cybersecurity vulnerabilities in mock online operating systems.
During this six-hour match, JROTC classrooms were converted into computer workrooms allowing students plenty of space to play as a team. CyberPatriot XI has experienced an increase of 1,000 teams since the 2017-2018 season, bringing the current total of teams registered to 6,387. The teams hail from all 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. U.S. Department of Defense schools in several other countries, including Spain, Australia and Egypt, also participate in the cybersecurity challenge.
MacArthur graduate Peter Meyers is volunteering as a CyberPatriot team mentor this year. He helped lead the MacArthur team to the national competition in Maryland in 2012. Meyers continued a career in cybersecurity and graduated from Texas A&M University in 2018. He now works for the Northrop Grumman Corporation.
