SETA students land at NASA's JFK Space Center

Four Roosevelt High School students from our Space and Engineering Technologies Academy (SETA) recently traveled to NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida to participate in a special space symposium.

An experiment from Solongel Bass, Tina Tse, Amanda Brake and Bryan Godos will soon head to space as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program. They plan to study how microgravity will affect Chia seed growth. Their experiment will tentatively launch in late August or early September as part of Mission 18 as it travels to the International Space Station (ISS).

These students were invited to present their experiment during a science symposium. This gave them the opportunity to answer questions about their own project while listening and learning about other experiments from groups across the country.

When their experiment does launch, students will run a control experiment from Earth while astronauts on the ISS assist in monitoring the Chia seeds. Our students are responsible for assembling the experiment for the astronauts, and following precise weight and size specifications.

This is just one of the many incredible opportunities available to students in our SETA magnet school program at Krueger Middle School and Roosevelt High School. Anyone can apply! Check out SETA to learn more.
