Students excited after receiving 'I miss you' cards from teachers

Getting something in the mail can sometimes feel like a little treat.

Now, more than ever, hand-written letters give people a chance to reconnect when they can’t be together.

With school-wide closures due to Covid-19, the teachers at Stone Oak Elementary decided to show their students just how much they care by mailing them ‘I miss you’ cards.

“It started with our faculty meeting. Ms. Karrer was saying that she wanted us to stay connected to the kids and we were brainstorming. One of the ways we came up with was ‘miss you’ cards,” Julie Bridges explained.

Bridges and Kim Satterwhite have been teaching at Stone Oak for over twenty years and were excited to send out their cards.

“We really miss them and we can’t wait to see them again,” Satterwhite said.

Kids don’t typically receive mail so it was a fun experience for many of them.

“We do really care about our kids. They’re our kids for the year and we keep in touch with a lot of them,” Satterwhite said.

Fourth-grader Elli Lopez received a personalized card from the school principal and couldn’t put it down.

“Dear Elli, I miss your hugs and I hope that you’ve read a lot of books and played a lot of games,” Elli read.

Her mom said she loved seeing the joy it brought to her daughter.

“When she got the card, she ran home from the mailbox and read it about twenty times. She took it everywhere with her, to the bathroom, to the kitchen, the bedroom, everywhere,” Megan said.

Elli misses her friends and said the card helped her feel a sense of connection back to her school.

“I really, really miss them; I miss my two besties and it just made me feel good,” Elli said.

“I think it helped her to realize they were missing her too and this isn’t just her. Everyone is kind of feeling the pull right now,” Megan added.

Satterwhite and Bridges said they can’t wait to see their students’ smiling faces again.

“Keep trying and do your best. Keep that positive attitude, that’s all that we could ask really,” Bridges said.

They also shared a positive message for both parents and students.

“We’re all in the same boat; we are all learning to do distance-learning at the same time. We’re all in this together and we hope to be back in our classroom very soon.”

We’ll all get through this together, because #NEISDcares!
