Meaningful support for our military families

Purple is the color of the day today, as North East ISD recognizes and supports our military children and families for their strength and sacrifices.

April 15th is Purple Up! For Military Kids Day at NEISD. Purple indicates that all branches of the military are supported with Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue -- all combining as a single color: purple.

That unwavering support is on display every day at Driscoll Middle School through its Student 2 Student (S2S) program. Now over 20 students strong, S2S connects civilian students with new military students the day they arrive to ensure they have a friendly face to answer questions, show them around, eat lunch together and more.

Military child and Driscoll sixth grader Layne Ruescher has lived in Alaska, North Dakota and Texas so far.

“One thing I wish others would understand about military life is your parents can’t quit and say, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ It’s a total commitment for everyone in the family. I am part of the military. I am a military child!”

NEISD is proud to have the S2S program in place at every elementary, middle and high school. At Driscoll, and many of our campuses, this program isn’t just for military children – it’s utilized so that every child has a support system in place when they enroll.

This program is extra special to Driscoll S2S sponsors Laura Scofield and Michelle Martinez. Both are former military members who can relate to the children and families that have moved around the world – selflessly going wherever duty takes them.

Driscoll is also one of 65 NEISD schools designated as a Purple Star campus. These are awarded by the Texas Education Agency to schools that excel in meeting the needs of military students and their families.

April is the Month of the Military Child, and an important time to honor the sacrifices made by military families worldwide. But at NEISD, support is provided year-round #theNEISDway.
