"There are special things about kids at each grade level."

Blaylock with NEISD way sign

Naming her favorite book of all time is a tough question for Dellview Elementary School librarian Mari Blaylock. But if you ask her about her favorite part of the job, that’s easy: it’s the kids.

“I love hanging out with the kids. I love reading a story and seeing them really get into it. I love watching them grow as readers and learners. Being with the students is easily my favorite part of the job.”

Blaylock has served Dellview students in the library for seven years. She loves their curiosity, the questions they ask, and how she gets to be there when a lesson just clicks.

North East ISD librarians do much more than stack shelves and help students check out books. They reinforce lessons taught in classrooms. Blaylock often starts her day with small groups of students who might need extra help understanding certain grammar concepts or help with their reading skills. She collaborates with teachers to help reinforce classroom lessons, turning the library into a science lab, a crafting corner or a land far, far away. But for Blaylock, it’s not just about creating innovative lessons; it’s about building relationships and setting a solid foundation for lifelong learning and reading.

“I love that we get all the kids. Not just one classroom; as the librarian, we get them all. I make it a point to learn everybody’s name. So, they know they are known, they feel special, and they know I am here for them. There are special things about kids at each grade level, and getting to enjoy each of those levels is great. I love working with these kids.”

April is School Library Month. We want to recognize all the NEISD librarians who work so hard to support our campuses and students #theNEISDway.

Want to make them feel special? Send them a Staff Shout Out!

P.S. One of her favorite books is The Giving Tree.
