NEISD offers resources for families to cultivate success
Azeza Salama didn’t know what to expect when she walked into North East ISD’s Community Learning Center (CLC) to attend the 18th annual Family Engagement Training. It didn’t take long for her, and hundreds of other parents and guardians in attendance, to embrace the message.
“This is my first time being here and it’s been a great experience,” said Salama. “I think it’s amazing and it’s very important to have community outreach like this. NEISD is one of the best school districts because they’re really involved and they have opportunities for workshops.”
Students are constantly learning and evolving in and out of the classroom. NEISD plays a key role in shaping their futures, but the District also realizes the even greater impact that parents and guardians have. The District’s Family Engagement Department offers many resources for support, training and development during the school year.
Attendees heard from motivational speaker and author with NEISD roots. Mills Carnell Rodgers II previously taught at Nimitz Middle School and Roosevelt High School. Now he travels around the country sharing his insights on student success and attaining goals. Breakout sessions with a wide variety of topics gave parents the chance to learn and ask questions in an interactive classroom setting. Some of the sessions covered subjects like vaping, healthy relationships, social emotional learning and healthy eating on a budget.
“Not only are the students evolving, but we’re growing as parents and we’re learning to get to know about the opportunities they have for them,” said Salama. “You also get to meet other parents who might have something relatable going on in their lives.”
This free event is coordinated by the District’s Family Engagement Department.
