The Texas Bluebonnet Reading Program

Bluebonnet Book Guidelines at Encino Park Elementary

Texas Bluebonnet Award Reading Program:

is a unique program that encourages reading for pleasure and is aimed at students in grades 3-6. Each year, 20 books are chosen as the “Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List” by the TBA (Texas Bluebonnet Association) selection committee. If students read a minimum of five books from the current master list (or listen to the books), they have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title during the month of January each year. The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is declared the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

The List of this year's books can be found on the Texas Library Associations page.

  • Mrs. Figueroa may read some of the picture books during library time. Teachers may choose to read some of the books to the class as well. The library will have a copy of each of the books and teachers will be given classroom copies of the books appropriate for that grade level. Teachers will circulate the books within their own classrooms.

  • Books can also be found at the San Antonio Public Library and on Sora, an ebook collection that students have access to through their classlink login.  We will discuss how to access this during library time.

  • Please remember that not all of the books are appropriate for every single student.  The list is meant to provide a variety of choices of genres, interests and reading levels in grades 3rd-6th. Please ask Mrs. Figueroa if you have any questions about specific books. Feel free to email me at mfigue2@neisd.net

  • Students can keep track of the books they read using the attached Texas Bluebonnet Award Tracking chart.  You can also print your own chart if you would like by going to the Texas Bluebonnet Website.
  • Students who read 5 books will be eligible to vote for their favorite book .  Students will use QR codes at school to take a short quiz on the books they read.  The questions for the quiz are easy for anyone who has read the book. Students will get a sticker for their tracking chart and a raffle ticket for every finished quiz to add to the ticket jar of the prize(s) they wish to win.

  • Tracking charts will be due to Mrs.Figueroa in late January. A completion deadline will be announced after the winter break along with voting details and raffle prize details.

Thank you for your help in encouraging students to read for pleasure!
