Meet TASSP’s Region 20 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year

Being an educator is more than a job for Chris Castro. As an assistant principal at Nimitz Middle School, he’s well aware of the impact he can have on students living through some of the most transformative years of their lives. He’s not in it for the accolades or the recognition. The best leaders aren’t – they’re there for the right reasons.

The right reasons led Castro to be named the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) Region 20 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year.

“I was humbled after I found out,” said Castro. “We don’t do this job for the recognition. We simply do it because we love kids and guiding them through the challenges of growing up as responsible citizens. I was also very proud. We work hard as a team at Nimitz/STEM to provide the very best educational experience to our kids. So, this award does not just reflect my success, but our school’s success.”

While this recognition may come as a surprise to Castro, his colleagues across Nimitz and the STEM Academy believe it’s long overdue.

“Mr. Castro is a well-rounded leader,” said Jennifer Cooper, Nimitz principal. “He remembers what it was like to be a teacher so he has the heart of one. Student success is his true north. His choices and actions are made with one question in mind, ‘Is it what’s best for our kids?’ He is an incredible asset and truly deserving of this honor.”

Castro is a firm believer in the culture of mutual respect and unwavering support at Nimitz. This nurturing environment helps set him up for success, and that allows him to lift those around him. The opportunity to truly make a difference and change a life motivates him every day.

“What keeps me coming back year after year is knowing that we are changing and enriching lives,” said Castro. “I think most educators get into this profession because we were blessed along the way with great teachers, coaches, and leaders. Pouring our heart into this career is a way of paying it forward.”

Congratulations Mr. Castro!
