Distance learning paves the way for aspiring Eagle Scout's service project

Vineyard Ranch Elementary School is a special place for Huston Allen and his family. He is an aspiring Eagle Scout, and when it came time to build his service project, the school was the first place that came to mind.

"I knew I wanted to do something at Vineyard Ranch because of the great experience my sisters and I have had," said Allen. "The teachers were very encouraging and were always willing to help me."

Even as Huston moves on to Reagan High School, he and his sisters have many fond memories at 'The Ranch.' It's also the place where Huston learned to play one of his favorite pastimes: chess. An outdoor checkerboard seemed like the perfect new addition on the playground. It's also a game that every student can take part in.

"I liked the idea of building a checkerboard outside because it is a colorful design to fill in an open spot around the playground area," said Allen. "It's a game that all students can enjoy. It doesn't matter if you're fast, tall or disabled - anyone can play."

Huston started planning his service project in February and finalized his design just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He took advantage of the transition to online learning to fundraise and gather materials. In May, he installed a patio made of gravel, sand and stone pavers on the playground. He topped it off with colorful sport court tiles.

Huston also assembled a bench to accompany the checkerboard and the Allen family donated the chess pieces. Thank you to McCoy's Building and Supply and Grand Slam Courts for donating the supplies and materials.
