Eisenhower students earn worldwide recognition

The COVID-19 crisis changed this past school year. It changed our plans and focus, but it also created unique opportunities for North East ISD students.

One groups of students from Eisenhower Middle School got creative and honed their critical thinking skills during the campus closure. They created better bedrooms with the game, Minecraft.

“The game is so much more than just a game,” said Leyva. “Kids are able to work together to create their very own world. I love using Minecraft as a tool for learning because it is a gaming platform that many kids are already using!”

The sky was the limit. They could put rollercoasters in their rooms or even a lava pit, but it was their attention to detail and design that got them worldwide recognition.

Minecraft’s article on the Build a Better Bedroom challenge noted, "Ms. Leyva's students in the USA created several builds. One features wood-textured interior decorating that’s a match for mid-century modern design at its best.”

When Kara saw her students featured in the global report, she was floored.

“I was proud! The students’ whose builds were featured were super excited,” said Leyva. “It doesn’t take much to show off what our kids are creating and doing. I am happy others around the world can see how games and learning are relevant to our students.”
