Mayor Ron Nirenberg joins NEISD curbside pickup line

North East ISD is closing in on 1.7 million meals served to children and teens in need through its curbside pickup and Fresh Express bus delivery routes. The District’s School Nutrition Services team has been hard at work to ensure every child receives meal packages for the week during Monday and Thursday pickup and delivery days.

On Monday, May 18, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg joined NEISD cafeteria staff to hand out meals at Serna Elementary School. This opportunity allowed Nirenberg to see firsthand how vital this service is to communities across the city.

“It’s further proof that the campuses of North East and our school districts, in general, operate as more than just schools,” said Nirenberg. “They’re communities and they’re extended families to our residents. It’s satisfying to see that safety net is there in the worst of times.”

NEISD started preparing over spring break to ensure our Nutrition Services team was ready to start serving free, nutritious meals on March 16. On April 30, the District surpassed one million meals served. This is a testament to the NEISD bus drivers, cafeteria staff and administrators who do everything they can to provide for our students no matter the circumstances.

“It shows they really care,” said Nirenberg. “They really care about the families that they sustain on a daily basis when school is in session, and it’s heartwarming to see them have that same care when school has been shut down for two months.”
