A Parent’s Perspective: Taking it one day at a time

North East ISD parent Crystal Wood is focused on taking it one day at a time. Her children are learning to do the same, and it’s helped them settle into a manageable distance learning routine. Madison is a sophomore at MacArthur High School and Colten attends Bradley Middle School as a seventh grader. Wood says it took the entire household a few weeks to adjust to their new “normal,” but now each student has found a steady rhythm.

“They both like doing their schoolwork online,” said Wood. “It’s not so structured and they can do it on their own time. The schools really helped us by posting videos on their Facebook pages about Google classroom and Zoom.”

While taking each day one assignment at a time has helped prioritize lessons and assignments, the transition can still feel stressful at times. Crystal says that Colten can find relief during those moments by reaching out to his teachers and classmates.

“His teachers post videos and talk to them which I love seeing,” said Wood. “He really enjoys seeing them and hearing their voices. I know that makes a difference.”

While Madison and Colten have seen success in online learning, it could never replace seeing their friends and teachers every day. Until the time comes when we all can be reunited, Crystal wants to encourage other parents to take it one day at a time.

“My advice to other parents is to take it one day at a time and remember we are all in the same boat,” said Wood. “This is new to all of us. It’s not easy for anyone, but NEISD and our teachers have done a great job.”
