Roosevelt students honor their teachers

Student James Bass honored his soccer coach Darnell Barnes. Megan Burciaga brought her AP Statistics teacher Richard Thompson to the stage with her. And Cameron Dunn chose his Orchestra teacher Lydia Hurtado-Yanez.

The students shared sentiments, such as:

“He was the one who held me to the highest standards, always pushing me to be great in my studies, as well as on the field.”

“He was always so patient with me and instilled in me the fight to never give up.”

“Mrs. H and her constant examples of compassion, wit and strength have not only been influential, but have gotten me to where I am today.”

These three students were among the 62 Roosevelt High School Summa Cum Laude graduates honored at a reception on April 23.

Each Summa each chose a teacher who had a significant impact on his or her education. It was a night that spotlighted educators, students and their families.

Special guests in the audience included Superintendent of Schools Brian G. Gottardy; Associate Superintendent Donna Newman; Board members Sandy Hughey, Joseph Trevino, David Beyer and Terri Williams; and Executive Director Joe Reasons.
