Read Around the School event a hit at Harmony Hills

Students at Harmony Hills Elementary School celebrated National Reading Day by holding a Read Around the School event. This year’s theme for students and teachers was “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers.” A major theme librarian Angela Oliverson worked to establish with students is that books can be like windows, mirrors and doors into the lives of each other.

“It is always great for our students to embrace reading as diverse because our students are a diverse group of learners and readers,” said Oliverson. “This is what creates harmony at Harmony Hills Elementary.”

Oliverson and Instructional Interventionist (IIT) Kathryn Hoelscher teamed up to promote the event this year. Teachers were encouraged to dress up for the event and choose hats, props for their stories. Reading buddies walked their buddies around the school and choose stories together to help prepare for the afternoon of reading and storytelling.
