You can register for our comprehensive program online at neisd.ce.eleyo.com in the Driver Education section, by calling (210) 407-0140 and Select "0" to register over the phone, or by coming to 8750 Tesoro Drive during regular business hours.
After registering, send in the course enrollment contract for your class.
-
What different programs do you offer?
Our main program is our comprehensive program. This includes all of the state-required components, including classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. This class can be taken in one of the following three ways:
- Live, in-person at one of the NEISD high school campuses or the NEISD Community Learning Center
- Self-paced, online
- No matter which way you choose to complete your classroom instruction, you will receive behind-the-wheel instruction with our comprehensive program.
-
How much does this program cost?
Our Comprehensive Program, which includes 32 hours of classroom instruction, all textbooks, certificates, and 14 hours of driving instruction, costs $370.
-
How does this program differ from a private/commercial driving school?
The same regulating body, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), oversees all driver education programs in Texas. We all have the same required components and have instructors that are licensed through the same regulating agency. Since we are a part of NEISD, we run our classes from and in NEISD locations at a fraction of the price of most commercial driving schools. Our main difference is the DPS permit exam that is completed at your DPS appointment, and not during class.
-
Can students take class anywhere, or are they limited to their home high school?
Any high school student may take any of our courses. Students are not limited to their home/assigned high school.
We also accept students that are enrolled in HS but are not NEISD students.
-
Do you teach students how to drive?
We do! Our licensed instructors take students from the very beginning to road-ready through our program.
-
Does NEISD provide cars for in-car/behind-the-wheel instruction?
We do! We have a dedicated fleet of cars solely for driver education that we use for all drives
-
Am I notified if my student misses a class?
No, we do not notify parents or guardians if a student does not attend class.
-
I wouldn’t be able to get to class until 30 minutes after it begins every day. Am I still able to attend?
- Unfortunately, State regulations require that students be present for 55 minutes of every instructional hour. Arriving late to class is not something we can allow.
- We have classes that start later, and self-paced, online classes for those who have schedules that conflict with our in-person classes.
-
How does a student pass the class?
Students must receive a 70% or higher average grade on all coursework, including tests, quizzes, daily work, and the final exam.
-
What supplies are needed for this class?
We ask that students come to class with something to write on and something to write with.
-
What happens if I miss a class?
- Students are allowed to miss up to 10 hours of classroom instruction before they are removed from class. There are 16 days or 32 instructional hours in this course.
- To make up a class, the student will need to attend the day they missed (Day 1-16) with another class. The makeup information, instructions, and calendar may be found by clicking this link which takes you to our driver education website.
-
How long do I have to complete this program?
Due to COVID, different school years will have different contractual deadlines.
- Students taking a class from August 2021 and after have nine (9) months to complete the entire program from the first day of class.
-
My student does not attend NEISD. Can they still enroll in this program?
They absolutely may! Any active high school student may enroll in this program.
-
Can a student 18 or older enroll in this program?
While this program is geared towards 15-17-year-olds, any active high school student 15 or older may enroll. Driver education requirements change when a person turns 18, but they can still complete the teen program as long as they are in high school. At their DPS appointment, they will specify that they are requesting an Adult License with Permit Restrictions.
-
How do I get my permit?
- Permits must be obtained through a Texas DPS location. This can be any location in the state of Texas. Most locations do require an appointment, though some are open to walk-ins.
- After completing the first 6 hours of classroom instruction, whether it be online or in-person, students will receive a DE-964. This form verifies that a student is actively enrolled in a concurrent course and has completed the required hours to obtain a permit. This form, along with all required documents, should be taken to DPS to apply for a permit.
- To review all required documents, please visit the DPS website by clicking here.
- Please note that students who take a live class (online or in-person) must pass a multiple-choice examination at the DPS in order to receive their permit.
-
What do I bring with me to my DPS appointment?
For information on the documentation needed at a DPS appointment, please review the page linked at the end of this FAQ on the DPS website on applying for a teen driver license in Texas. As requirements may change, we want to make sure you always have the most up-to-date information - Link to the DPS website.
-
What is a VOE? How do I get one?
A Verification of Enrollment, or VOE, is a document from the student’s home campus verifying that the student is actively enrolled in school. To obtain one, please call the main number of your home campus, and let them know that you need a VOE. A VOE is valid for 30 days during the school year and 90 days during the summer.
-
How do I make an appointment to drive?
- Driving appointments may only be made after a permit/learner license is obtained from DPS. For instructions on obtaining a permit, please see the “How do I get my permit?” FAQ on this page.
- After you have obtained your permit, please follow the instructions included in your course enrollment contract, or linked here, that walk you through how to create a Schedule 2 Drive account.
- Please make sure when enrolling that you enter your Texas Driver License/Learner License number, and not your student ID or any other number.
- Once your account has been approved, you can begin scheduling available drives!
-
What time do you post new drives?
- Beginning July 1st, new drives are posted every Friday at 4:30PM
- As students withdraw from drives throughout the week, new drives will become available. These cancelations are unregulated and can happen at any time.
-
Do I have to drive with my student to complete this program?
- While the State does not require that parents drive with their students specifically, they do require a Practice Log. The Practice Log must be completed before a student finishes their last drive. These 30 hours are completed outside of the time with our licensed instructors and completed with a licensed adult supervising. The log requires at least 10 hours of nighttime drives and is recorded in Schedule 2 Drive.
- We remind students throughout the program to work on their Practice Log to ensure that it is complete by the time they are ready to finish the course.
-
Do you drive with students in the rain?
- We do! One of the best times for a student to learn to drive in the rain is with a licensed instructor.
- Please note that in the case of severe thunderstorms, flash flood warnings, snow, and other extreme weather conditions, we do reserve the right to cancel drives in the interest of safety.
-
Where do the drives take place?
Our drives take place at most NEISD high school campuses and our central office, the NEISD Community Learning Center (CLC). Holidays and weekends are at the NEISD CLC to mitigate drive cancellations due to no-shows.
NEISD CLC: 8750 Tesoro Dr. San Antonio, TX 78217.
-
How does the Practice Log work?
- The State of Texas requires that students complete a 30-hour practice log. This log must be completed before a student completes their final drive. Students must practice driving with a licensed adult 21 or older with at least one year of driving experience.
- Students may record all driving time, but only 60 minutes per day count towards the 30-hour requirement.
- Driving hours with NEISD instructors do not count toward this requirement and should not be recorded on this log.
- 10 of the 30 hours must be completed at night, which is from sunset to sunrise.
-
How often can I schedule drives?
Drives with our instructors can be scheduled with three days in between them.
Ex: If you drive on a Saturday, you can drive again the following Wednesday.
-
When do you have drives?
Our drivers drive year-round! We have drives evenings, weekends, holidays, early release days, and all summer. Drive times will vary from week to week.
-
How long does it take to complete the drives?
We provide students 9 months to complete their program. Some students finish this in as quick as a couple of months, while others need the entire time. We caution students and parents that set a rapid timeline, as you may not always complete the program on a personal timeline.
As a reminder, all students under 18 must hold a permit for at least 6 months before they can obtain a driver license.
-
Can I drive without my permit if I have a picture of it?
No. State law requires that you have the physical license/permit in your possession to drive. You may never drive with an expired permit or license.
Please note that students who arrive at a drive without their permit, with an expired permit, or a photo of their permit will not be allowed to drive and will receive a no-show fee.
-
I lost my DE-964. How do I get a new one?
Please complete and return the Duplicate Request Form to driversedu@neisd.net. The $20 duplicate fee is payable at the appointment pickup.
-
Do you offer an employee discount?
We do! Full-time, permanent NEISD employees receive a 20% discount on our comprehensive program. You can select the "employee pricing" option on neisd.ce.eleyo.com
-
I want to sign up for behind-the-wheel training only. What do I need?
- We have limited availability in our in-car-only program, and this program is not always available for registration.
- You will need to have completed an entire 32-hour course from a licensed program. This will come in the form of a DE-964 or equivalent certificate. This form will need to be completed and signed in its entirety. These hours will need to be transferred to NEISD, 8750 Tesoro Drive, San Antonio, Texas, 78217. We will also need a copy of your learner license/permit and our course enrollment contract signed and returned.
- To register for BTW only, you must call or register in person.
-
What is Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD), and how do I take it?
- ITTD is a two-hour, online, self-paced course required to be completed outside of the classroom/comprehensive program. This program is to be completed within 90 days of your appointment at DPS to upgrade your learner license to a driver license.
- The website for this course is https://impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov/ittd/.
-
I finished my program. How do I get my certificate?
Certificates are ready 3-5 business days after the entire program is completed. This includes all classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. Please email driversedu@neisd.net or call (210) 407-0170 to set an appointment for pickup. All certificates must be signed for by a parent or legal guardian, per State of Texas requirements.
-
When should I schedule my DPS Road Test?
Please do not schedule your DPS Road Test until you have completed the program in full and made your appointment to collect your certificate. Unforeseen circumstances do arise from time to time which will delay the final test.
-
I requested an account in Schedule 2 Drive, and it hasn’t been activated. What should I do?
Please email us at driversedu@neisd.net with the student’s name and permit number.
