What different programs do you offer?
Our main program is our comprehensive program. This includes all of the state-required components, including classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. This class can be taken in one of the following three ways:
- Live, in-person at one of the NEISD high school campuses or the NEISD Community Learning Center
- Self-paced, online
- No matter which way you choose to complete your classroom instruction, you will receive behind-the-wheel instruction with our comprehensive program.
-
How much does this program cost?
Our Comprehensive Program, which includes 32 hours of classroom instruction, all textbooks, certificates, and 14 hours of driving instruction, costs $370.
-
How does this program differ from a private/commercial driving school?
The same regulating body, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), oversees all driver education programs in Texas. We all have the same required components and have instructors that are licensed through the same regulating agency. Since we are a part of NEISD, we run our classes from and in NEISD locations at a fraction of the price of most commercial driving schools. Our main difference is the DPS permit exam that is completed at your DPS appointment, and not during class.
-
Can students take class anywhere, or are they limited to their home high school?
Any high school student may take any of our courses. Students are not limited to their home/assigned high school.
We also accept students that are enrolled in HS but are not NEISD students.
-
Do you teach students how to drive?
We do! Our licensed instructors take students from the very beginning to road-ready through our program.
-
Does NEISD provide cars for in-car/behind-the-wheel instruction?
We do! We have a dedicated fleet of cars solely for driver education that we use for all drives
-
Am I notified if my student misses a class?
No, we do not notify parents or guardians if a student does not attend class.
-
I wouldn’t be able to get to class until 30 minutes after it begins every day. Am I still able to attend?
- Unfortunately, State regulations require that students be present for 55 minutes of every instructional hour. Arriving late to class is not something we can allow.
- We have classes that start later, and self-paced, online classes for those who have schedules that conflict with our in-person classes.
-
How does a student pass the class?
Students must receive a 70% or higher average grade on all coursework, including tests, quizzes, daily work, and the final exam.
-
What supplies are needed for this class?
We ask that students come to class with something to write on and something to write with.
-
What happens if I miss a class?
- Students are allowed to miss up to 10 hours of classroom instruction before they are removed from class. There are 16 days or 32 instructional hours in this course.
- To make up a class, the student will need to attend the day they missed (Day 1-16) with another class. The makeup information, instructions, and calendar may be found by clicking this link which takes you to our driver education website.
-
How long do I have to complete this program?
Due to COVID, different school years will have different contractual deadlines.
- Students taking a class from August 2021 and after have nine (9) months to complete the entire program from the first day of class.
-
My student does not attend NEISD. Can they still enroll in this program?
They absolutely may! Any active high school student may enroll in this program.
-
Can a student 18 or older enroll in this program?
While this program is geared towards 15-17-year-olds, any active high school student 15 or older may enroll. Driver education requirements change when a person turns 18, but they can still complete the teen program as long as they are in high school. At their DPS appointment, they will specify that they are requesting an Adult License with Permit Restrictions.
