On May 8, 2023, the Board of Trustees approved the adoption of the Choosing the Best program for instruction in Human Sexuality and Abstinence Education (HSAE) and Abuse/Violence Prevention for middle school and high school. However, the approval was contingent upon edits made under the direction of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) with approval by the Board of Trustees.
On June 12, 2023, the NEISD Board of Trustees approved all edits and instructional materials for the high school HSAE and abuse/violence prevention curriculum to be implemented in all high school health credit courses beginning in the fall of 2023.

Update February 14, 2024
The NEISD SHAC approved the recommended instructional materials for elementary maturation (HSAE) which will be presented to the Board of Trustees for their approval. If approved, the instruction will be offered in the spring to all 4th and 5th grade students.

Public Meeting on the elementary maturation curriculum video and resources held January 23 and 24, 2024 are posted below. Open the Meeting Resources link to access the LinkTree that includes a Google Form to submit feedback on the curriculum to the SHAC. Submitted feedback and SHAC responses can also be viewed in the LinkTree.

Update January 11, 2024
The NEISD SHAC has scheduled two public meetings on the elementary maturation curriculum (videos) being considered for adoption.

Update December 11, 2023
The NEISD Board of Trustees approved all edits and instructional materials for the 7th grade HSAE and abuse/violence prevention curriculum to be implemented in the spring of 2024. The Board of Trustees also approved the use of the 7th grade approved materials (Choosing the Best Path) for 8th grade students in the spring of 2024 only while the SHAC continues to review 8th grade materials for implementation in the 2024-2025 school year.

On October 9, 2023, final edits of instructional materials for 6th grade HSAE & Abuse/Violence prevention were approved by the Board of Trustees.
HOW TO PREVIEW MATERIALS
As updated, copyrighted materials are finalized with the approved edits, they will be posted on the HSAE & Abuse/Violence Prevention portal pages in Skyward (https://portal.neisd.net/hsae) for parents to review (requires Skyward Family Access login to view).
Parents may also view final, copyrighted program materials in person by scheduling an appointment at their student’s campus or at North East Sports Park during regular business hours.
PERMISSION SLIPS
6th grade permission slips will be sent home by the student's teacher at least 14 days prior to the start of instruction and will include information on Parent Preview meetings. Sample permission slips can be viewed using the links below; however, these are for preview purposes only. The actual permission slip will be sent home by the student's teacher.

The program discusses the changes both boys and girls experience during puberty and adolescence. Two in-person Parent Preview Meetings will be offered. More information about the meetings and at-home preview window will be sent to parents/guardians of 4th and 5th grade students prior to student class dates. Parents/guardians may view program materials through Skyward Family Access (https://portal.neisd.net/hsae) or in person by scheduling an appointment at their student’s campus anytime during regular business hours.
ABUSE PREVENTION
This curriculum is still under review by the SHAC per the January 2022 Board resolution. Before the SHAC can make any recommendations to the Board for adoption of the curriculum, it must host two public meetings on the curriculum materials. For updates on the curriculum review process, please visit the SHAC website at www.neisd.net/shac.

Elementary Maturation and Abuse Prevention
ELEMENTARY MATURATION
NEISD adopted and utilizes a one-hour video-based Elementary Maturation lesson facilitated by the school nurse. The program discusses the changes both boys and girls experience during puberty and adolescence.
Two in-person Parent Preview Meetings will be offered. If unable to attend a Parent Preview Meeting,parents/guardians may view the Elementary Maturation videos at home for a one month period of time. More Information about the meetings and at-home preview window will be sent to parents/guardians of 4th and 5th grade students prior to student class dates. Parents/guardians may view program materials through Skyward Family Access (https://portal.neisd.net/hsae) or in person by scheduling an appointment at their student’s campus anytime during regular business hours.Written parent/guardian permission is required for a student to attend the maturation lesson. Specifics about each grade level program can be reviewed below.
4th Grade
● Instruction will occur during the following window of time:
January 6 - May 20, 2025
● Campus Registered Nurses provide instruction during the regularly scheduled school day.
● Topics include:
○ puberty,
○ hygiene,
○ nutrition,
○ sleep,
○ self-esteem,
○ body image, and
○ Menstruation.
● One-hour lesson taught to students separated into same-sex groups.
5th Grade
● Instruction will occur during the following window of time:
January 6 - May 20, 2025
● Campus Registered Nurses provide instruction during the regularly scheduled school day.
● Topics include:
○ puberty,
○ sleep,
○ hygiene,
○ nutrition,
○ male and female reproductive systems,
○ self-esteem,
○ body image,
○ dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs,
○ menstruation,
○ fertilization and reproduction, and
○ stages of fetal development.
● One-hour lesson taught to students separated into same-sex groups.
ELEMENTARY ABUSE PREVENTION

Permission slips will include information on parent preview dates, times, and locations.
5th Grade

Once approved, instruction will occur during the following window of time: April - May 2025.

Instruction will be provided during the regularly scheduled school day to students whose parents/guardians have provided written consent.
