April 1-5 is National Assistant Principal Week, a great reminder of the contributions assistant principals make to our campuses.
Tyler Smurr is one of the assistant principals at Bush Middle School.
His days are full. He arrives at school early to greet students when they arrive. He walks the halls to help students needing an answer, a fist bump or a high five. He has afternoon lunch duty—greeting and dismissing students by mildly clever nicknames. When the final bell rings, he goes outside to make sure students get picked up or are on the bus.
When he’s not out and about, he’s in his office talking with students who need one-on-one time, calling parents who have questions, or meeting with members of his staff who need a little help.
When you write down Smurr’s school day, it looks pretty busy, but for him, all of those tasks really come down to one thing: building relationships.
“Once you build those relationships with the kids, the parents, and the staff, they trust you, and you can do the work. I love interacting with the kids. I really have a passion for it. I try to let each student know I care for them. The kids are number one, but we all have to work together to give them the best outcomes.”
