Ms. Burk

My name is Mary Burk, and I’m an ESL Reading/SSI teacher here at Jackson! I was born and raised here in San Antonio, and I’m an energetic teacher with huge passion for ESL! I began working at Jackson as a UTSA student teacher finishing a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and an ESL concentration. Between the welcoming, resourceful staff, and my gracious, hilarious 7th grade English learners, there was no doubt that Jackson had my heart. After graduating UTSA, I officially joined the Jaguar family to teach the students and subject I love!

What is English as a Second Language?

And why I love it so....

ESL, or "English as a Second Language," is a program offered to students who are not native English speakers. I chose to teach ESL at this age because learning English while being a middle schooler takes serious grit-- and I like teaching students who I also admire.

Teaching English literacy to students of another language is a joy and an honor, but most of all, an adventure! As a native speaker, I started learning English before I can remember, when talking as a baby. This isn’t the case for any of my students, as they are beginning to learn English in middle school. With this in mind, it’s important that my students feel understood, accepted and RESPECTED for what they are going through. I push for unity and collaboration in class so that students support one another as they learn.
