Ms. Burk

Welcome to my class webpage! My name is Mary Burk and I teach ESL Newcomer Reading at Jackson Middle School.  I'm from San Antonio, and I’m a third year teacher with a huge love for ESL!!!! I began at Jackson as a student teacher finishing a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and ESL concentration at UTSA. Between the welcoming, resourceful staff, and my gracious, hilarious 7th grade English learners, there was no doubt that Jackson had my heart. After graduating UTSA, I officially joined the Jaguar family to teach the students and subject I love!

What is English as a Second Language Reading?

ESL, or "English as a Second Language," is a program offered to students who are not native English speakers. My reading class is provided to all beginner and some intermediate English learners. Using linguistic supports and scaffolds, the coarse builds foundational reading strategies and fundamental English literacy skills. Student growth in reading comprehension and fluency is a focus area.

My Teaching Philosophy
Teaching English literacy to students of diverse cultures and languages is a joy, honor, and an adventure! I chose to teach ESL at this age because learning English while being a middle schooler takes much grit-- and I like teaching students who I also admire.  As a native speaker, I started learning English before I can remember, when talking as a baby. Since this isn’t the case for my students, I push for unity and collaboration in class so students support one another as they learn.
