Mrs. Kathleen Longley

Please, call me Katy! I am a native Texan and received my undergrad degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Southwestern University in Georgetown. Shortly thereafter, I moved to Oregon where I obtained my MEd in Deaf Ed. My training focused on the Bilingual Bicultural model of Deaf Education. After graduate school, I taught ASL at Westview High School in Portland, Oregon, before becoming a stay-at-home-mom for several years. I returned to the teaching world as an itinerant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing for Edgewood ISD in San Antonio. Due to the VERY long commute, I changed districts and am VERY happy to be here in North East. . . not only for the shorter commute, but for all of the support and opportunities that North East provides.

My teaching philosophy for Deaf Children is very simple:

1. We cannot simply teach Deaf children as though they are Hearing children who do not hear.

2. Language AND background knowledge FIRST!

3. Independence and Self-Advocacy are crucial elements that our Deaf children need to master.

In addition to my passion for Deaf children and Deaf education, I am the mother to FOUR wild, wonderful, and willful children. They keep me very busy. I love reading, hiking, camping, traveling, cross stitch, and needlepoint.
