Montgomery Elementary School counselor Jennifer Love loves her job.
She loves her school.
She loves her kids.
It turns out they love her too.
“If I am having a bad day, I just walk through the cafeteria at lunchtime and feel like a rock star. The kids give me hugs; they tell me they love me-- they tell me I look so pretty. The kids are just so loving, and it makes such a big difference.”
Love has been the counselor at Montgomery for five years. No two days have been the same, but her approach to the job and the students has never changed.
“I wake up every day and say, ‘Let me change something for someone today—make them smile or do anything to make their lives better because I came to work today.’ Then I will know I have succeeded.”
Success in counseling takes many forms; often, it’s the long game.
And now that she’s been here for a few years, she’s been lucky enough to see her students move on to Ed White Middle School and Roosevelt High School. She loves when she hears from them or their parents. She knows Montgomery isn’t the finished line; it’s where the foundation is laid for a better community.
“I tell them, ‘You are a mustang forever. If you struggle down the road, we are still here for you.’ We want parents to know we love your kids. If parents know something that works at home, let us know we can try that here. If we find something that works here, we are going to share that with you. We are willing to try anything because we want your child to be successful. I want to help create good people. Being here at Montgomery—I get to do that.”
