• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • Read for the Record is a reading promotion for students in K-2nd grades that is the world’s largest shared reading experience to celebrate children’s early language and social-emotional development. The librarian promoted the program in an email to all teachers and shared the 2022 Read for the Record Book, Nigel and the Moon, through the morning announcements.
  • Before the winter break, I prepared a Season's Reading Program for teachers that wish to participate. Season's readings are a holiday book each day for 9-12 days, depending on the size of the group. The books rotate through the list of teachers who are participating. There was a group with all English books and English or Spanish books for dual language classes.
  • Steubing Ranch held our annual Literary Pumpkin Patch. Students chose a literary character and used craft materials to design their pumpkins. The pumpkins were on display for one week, and students received a library prize for participating in the program.
  • Our Read Around the School (RATS) program is a fantastic event for our students at Steubing Ranch. Students in 3rd through 5th grade have a buddy in the lower grades. During RATS, students meet up with their buddies and walk around the school to listen to two stories of their choice read by classroom teachers. Each student leaves with a reading trinket to remember the RATS event. These events are held the week before winter break and during Dr. Seuss's week in March.

Teacher

  • Ms. Arce taught mini lessons to students in grades 3-5 to prepare them for inquiry research all year. Lessons on reliable resources, thin and thick question development, note taking, and citations were taught in the library, in classrooms, and using Zoom.
  • Fifth-grade students researched one of the fifty states of their choice in the library. During the inquiry research, the students used an “I see, I think, and I wonder” graphic organizer to build background knowledge. All classes developed questions about their state and gathered notes to complete an infographic using Canva.
  • Second-grade students learned about the history of the Macy's Day parade in the read-aloud Balloons over Broadway. We discussed the parade's past, and students then designed their balloons using a Doodle Buddy app.
  • Kindergarten learned about inquiry research through modeling with Ms. Arce. We developed questions about ladybugs and gathered information together using PebbleGo. Students will observe live ladybugs and will release one in the environment.

Lesson Spotlight

In second grade, students created a Canva project on one historical person. Students gathered information using the online resource PebbleGo and one print resource. Once the information was collected, students used notes to compose small paragraphs on their person. They added pictures and text to a Canva infographic. Students learned how to use Canva proficiently and could present information about their historical person to their classmates.

Collaborator

  • Ms. Arce met with all 3-5th grade teachers during their PLC Meeting. We discussed the vision for the library and classroom connections for the school year. Our conversations included library lessons and targeted support for students with a good inquiry research model.
  • Steubing Ranch collaborates with our family specialist for various programs and community outreach programs. These include parent training, food packs for students, clothing drives, parent resources, and other needs throughout the school year.
  • I collaborated with our campus ITS to distribute the school’s one-to-one device program in 3rd to 5th grade. The administration, ITS, and I unboxed and prepared all Chromebook devices, scanned them, and delivered them to all students.
  • I collaborated with the second grade on their research project and how to best design a schedule that will work around holidays, testing, and what is best for the students.

Collaboration Spotlight

My most successful collaboration moment has been working with my campus ITS (Instructional Technology Specialist) on research project ideas. She and I work well together. Our ideas flow when working together. We meet every couple of weeks to plan for different grade levels. We are currently working on designing a weather project for my first grade classes. Students enjoy the creations from all the projects we have planned together, and student learning has increased.

Campus Leader

  • Ms. Arce was selected to be the Spelling Bee Coordinator for the school. This role entails registering for the Spelling Bee, preparing study lists, ordering medals/trophies, and setting up and hosting the Spelling Bee for the school.
  • Erin Marshall and I co-taught a Lunch and Learn training for the 5th-grade team. During the presentation, teachers learned how to utilize Canva in their classrooms for different projects.
  • Mommy and Me is a great community event scheduled two times a month. Each session includes themed activities, storytime, manipulatives, songs, and crafts. On average, there are 5 to 8 participants that attend each event.
  • Advocacy for the library program is communicated to families throughout the school year. These reading promotions include Read Around the School, Literacy Pumpkin Patch, Schlitterbahn Wave of Pages, Bookmark Contest, etc. I share these programs with families through phone blasts, Facebook, Twitter, and advertisements.
