Roosevelt welcomes First Lady of San Antonio
Erika Prosper, the first lady of San Antonio, accepted an invitation from Roosevelt High School’s Women’s Equality Club to share her message of hope for the next generation.
“I do think actively inviting the community in to speak to students is one of the most powerful things a school can do,” said Prosper. “I think it’s important for students to have access to anybody in the community they feel can impart a good story, advice or suggestions. It doesn’t have to be anyone high profile. Someone with a powerful story can help inspire others.”
The Women’s Equality Club invited her to speak two years ago. Due to scheduling conflicts, it didn’t work out. Finally, this year, they were able to make the presentation happen.
Prosper shared a little about her upbringing in Weslaco, Texas, as the daughter of migrant farmworkers. She was the first in her family to go to college and has since obtained several degrees.
The heart of her message for students was to encourage them to find connections to their community and get involved in something that matters to them. That’s where change really happens.
