“Backpacks are just the beginning.”

ALIR with backpacks

Montgomery Elementary School students will be ready for the new school year thanks to the help of our ALIRians.

ALIR stands for Academy of Learning in Retirement (ALIR). The all-volunteer North East ISD organization fosters lifelong learning for seniors over the age of 50. Over the past couple of weeks, they raised enough donations to purchase nearly 70 backpacks full of supplies for Montgomery students.

“This is just a starting point,” said ALIRian Karen Burns. “These students need to be seen, known, loved and valued. A backpack is just the first step. We are looking forward to establishing a deeper relationship with the school and the students here.”

ALIRians also collect donations to offer scholarships to NEISD graduating seniors every year.
