Teacher Feature: Vineyard Ranch's Irma Murray

Teacher Feature Irma Banner

When Irma Murray left Mexico to teach in San Antonio, she expected to stay only a year. But she fell in love with our District, our students and our city.

Twenty years later, she couldn’t be happier with her decision.

“I am very blessed to be able to do what I like. I love my kids. I didn’t know I was an elementary school teacher until I came and I met these kids.”

Murray taught high school in Mexico, but when North East ISD began expanding our Dual Language programs 20 years ago, she saw an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. She packed two suitcases and a dream and moved to San Antonio.

She started teaching in the United States at Larkspur Elementary School and taught there for 16 years before coming to Vineyard Ranch

“North East became my home. Not everybody can go to a job and enjoy it. And I do enjoy it every day,” said Murray. “You know, it’s so nice to come to a job where you come in, and everybody loves you, and they hug you in the morning. They see you like if you’re a superhero.”

Of course, they do. Maestra Murray makes learning fun. She has filled her classroom with fun books about animals, brightly colored posters with vocabulary words in English and Spanish, and music reinforcing the day’s lesson. And Murray isn’t afraid to sing with the students and bust out a few dance moves.

“I think if you love your kids, they know you love them. If they know you are there for them. If they know you are kind to them. They can feel it. I learn from the kids; they learn from me, and then they learn from each other. So, this is a community. We work together. I am blessed here.”
