Mr. Brett Lair

Hi, my name is Mr. Lair! I am a proud graduate of Texas State University, where I earned my degree in Music Education. As a lifelong learner and dedicated educator, I’m incredibly excited to return to my home district of North East ISD—where my own musical journey first began—as the new music teacher at Jackson-Keller Elementary.

Throughout my teaching experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with students across a wide range of grade levels, from kindergarten through eighth grade. My student teaching placements at Eisenhower Middle School and Hidden Forest Elementary provided me with invaluable hands-on experience, where I led beginning woodwind, brass, and percussion classes, assisted with advanced bands, and taught general music in grades K–5. Prior to student teaching, I supported band programs across Central Texas, including Highlands High School—where I assisted with the marching band—and Simon Middle School, where I worked with both beginning and advanced band classes.

As a performer, I have been an active member of multiple ensembles at Texas State, including the Bobcat Marching Band, TXST Concert Bands, Jazz Ensemble, Salsa del Rio, and Orquesta del Rio. My primary instrument is trombone, though I am also proficient in all low brass, bass guitar, and am continuing to build my skills with woodwinds. Beyond performance, I served in several leadership roles with Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, including Vice President, and contributed to multiple service and music outreach initiatives that deepened my passion for community engagement through music.

My teaching philosophy centers around creating a safe, inclusive, and joyful space for students to grow as both musicians and individuals. I strive to help each child discover their unique voice, build confidence, and develop a lifelong appreciation for music.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy spending time outdoors, fishing, and camping with my two dogs, Hermione and Ginger. I also have a weakness for Coca-Cola, M&M Minis, and a good barbecue!
