Librarian

  • Social emotional learning lessons are a must when forming relationships at the beginning of the year. After reading My First Day, students identified their feelings and the feelings of the character in the book.
  • Author, Liz Garton Scanlon, visited our kinder, 1ist and 2nd graders. The students brainstormed to write their own book and learned how ideas become books.
  • Librarian supported TEKS by collaborating with the 2nd grade teachers to encourage the exploration of fairy tales. Librarian provided teachers with a class set of books, timelines, tests, and hosted the Fairy Tale Bowl in the library.
  • Students participated in a spring reading campaign hosted by the librarian and family specialist which included home library book distribution and family reading incentives. Each student received 5 free books, a reading journal and family engagement activity book.

Teacher

  • While reading The Great Fuzz Frenzy, students were asked to describe the characteristics of a prairie dog. Students created questions that they had about real life prairie dogs. Librarian mentored how to take notes and wrote down their questions. Pebble Go was introduced, and students were given time to research prairie dogs and get their questions answered.
  • After reading Turkey Trouble, students came up with a list of adjectives that described Turkey in the book. Students then had to write two to three sentences that explained how the turkey solved his problem using one of the adjectives from the list.
  • The Panda Problem allowed students to create questions about pandas. Students observed live pandas on a live panda cam and then spent some time in Pebble Go searching for answers to all of their questions.
  • Fourth and fifth grade students used the library resource, Encyclopedia Britannica, to learn about a past president to identify life events and characteristics that might have influenced him to become a president. Students then used a Venn diagram to compare themselves to the past president and share their findings with their group.

Lesson Spotlight

Librarian supported both TEKS and STAAR readiness by creating an inquiry unit for 5th grade. During the week of President's Day, students got to pick one president of their choice to research. Students used the library resources and their Chromebooks to gather facts about their president. After students gathered facts, they were asked to write a short essay that included information about the president, and any similarities or differences they had with the president. Students typed up their essays on a Chromebook which gave them much needed practice for the upcoming online STAAR test.

Collaborator

  • The librarian collaborated with 3rd grade teachers to reinforce learning of Freytag’s Pyramid. Students listened to a story and were given manipulatives that they had to plot on student created plot mountains. Students took plot mountains back to class and used them to plot other stories they were reading. Students then came back and coded Ozobots to move along their created plot mountains
  • The librarian was part of the Literacy Night Committee. Literacy night involves having students and their parents come to the campus in the evening to engage in literacy activities and the opportunity to come to the school book fair. The committee is in charge of creating the activities, decorating the school and creating promotional flyers and social media posts.
  • Working with the Instructional Technology Specialist, we kicked off the “Connected Classroom” district initiative in which every student in grades 2-5 received a chromebook and chromebook “boot camp” lesson on best practices.
  • The librarian collaborated with 4th/5th grade teachers to get students excited about figurative language in poetry. After learning about predators and prey in class, students came to the library ready to create similes and metaphors about their chosen predators and prey. The librarian showed the students how to create a comic strip in Canva to make their figurative language come to life.

Collaboration Spotlight

The librarian created a Who Would Win research project based on the popular Who Would Win series. Students picked an animal, bird, mammal or insect to research in class after learning how to take notes in the library. The teacher and I wanted to give the students the opportunity to practice typing up their writing on the computer to help them with the upcoming new STAAR, so after writing a rough draft that included three reasons why their animal would beat any other animal in the classroom, the students typed up their essay on the computer. Students were engaged in the research process since they were able to pick their topic, and they were excited about battling each other at the end. Each day two students read their argumentative essay to the class, then the class picked who would win. Everyday, two more students battled until everyone got a chance to present.

Campus Leader

  • The librarian hosted a PD for staff on Google Classroom and Writing. Teachers were shown how to create writing assignments using Google Classroom to help students navigate typing online answers to get them ready for STAAR.
  • Librarian teamed up with Family Specialist to help parents get the Skyward App on their phones. We allowed parents to drop in to get help in the library during parent conferences. During this time, parent library cards were also promoted to encourage reading at home.
  • Librarian was on the committee for the 60th Anniversary Extravaganza for Jackson-Keller. Librarian helped to plan, decorate and host the event. The Board of Directors, Superintendent, students, parents and community partners were invited to attend.
  • Librarian led the Connected Classroom district initiative at Jackson-Keller. The librarian scanned all existing Chromebooks, assigned all new Chromebooks, and managed the check out/check in lending portal.
