Students learn forensic science from the experts

rime scene experts works with Steubing Ranch students

Forensic science came to life at Steubing Ranch Elementary School as fourth graders learned alongside special guests from the San Antonio Police Department Crime Scene Investigations Team.

Fourth grade Gifted and Talented (GT) students were up to the challenge. They learned how to locate fingerprints and classify the different types of prints right alongside real-world experts. They also picked up plenty of fun facts about fingerprints and the challenges and rewards that come with a career in the forensic science field.

“It is my goal to enrich the students with real-world applications that will stay with them a lifetime,” said GT Teacher Jennifer Boyd.

After students learned the many fingerprint techniques, they used magnetic powder and magna brushes to dust their own fingerprints. Finally came the big reveal, where they discovered if they had loops, arches and whorl-style prints.
