NEISD serves up healthy meals with a twist

North East ISD practices and promotes healthy eating habits every day. National School Lunch Week, Oct. 11-15, allows us the chance to highlight the nutritious meals regularly served in our school cafeterias.

This year, Steubing Ranch Elementary School welcomed distinguished guest lunch servers on Thursday, Oct. 14. These people have significant jobs and responsibilities in our District, but took a moment to celebrate the importance of a healthy lunch by donning an apron, hat and gloves and helping on the lunch line.

They included members of our NEISD Board of Trustees, Superintendent of Schools, District administrators and members of our North East Police Department.

Chief Instructional Officer Anthony Jarrett was one of the guests serving up chicken, macaroni and cheese, and fruit to elementary school students.

“It was fun,” said Jarrett. “I enjoyed seeing their smiling faces and knowing we can load up their plates.”

The Texas Department of Agriculture's theme for the 2021 National School Lunch Week is "Feed your creativity with a healthy school lunch!" NEISD school lunches are healthier than ever, with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dishes lower in calories, fat and sodium. From steamed zucchini to fresh strawberries, there is a little something for everyone.

Chief of Schools and Leadership Rudy Jimenez joined Jarrett on the serving line and emphasized why we put so much care and planning into our meals.

“For many of our kids, this is the best meal they are going to have every day,” said Jimenez. “I think it’s really important that our students get the meal, but also have a great rapport with our food service staff, which we absolutely enjoyed working with today.”

NEISD lunches are always healthy, but this year, they are also free! So, make sure your students take advantage of this delicious opportunity. Our School Nutrition staff is waiting to serve you.
