“There is just so much excitement when they come in."

At North East ISD parents matter; and that’s why Wilshire Elementary School invited the parents of Gifted and Talented (GT) students into the classroom. Charmaine McMillen has been the GT Teacher at Wilshire and Clear Spring Elementary schools for two years. In her classroom student artwork and motivational posters cover the walls. Learning games, puzzles and robots fill the shelves. During the recent GT Showcase, excited students pulled their parents around the classroom pointing out the work they had done. The students became the teachers showing their parents the coding robots and puzzles that jump-start their passions for science, technology, engineering, art and math.

The classroom was filled with laughter, curiosity and learning.

“There is just so much excitement when they come in,” said McMillen. “They are excited to learn something new. The fact that they are ready for a challenge- really wanting to try anything I put in front of them- is the best.”

While McMillen loves the curiosity and excitement every day, this was extra special, watching the students show off their work and teach their parents.  This GT Showcase also gave parents an opportunity to ask questions about the different technologies, learning strategies and games their students have access to in class.

NEISD values the partnership we have with our parents as we work together toward student success #theNEISDway
