Introduction and Previous Experience
Hello, my name is Mrs. Alice Powell-Brown. I am now beginning my 17th year of teaching and in my 25th year of working with children with disabilities. Before teaching, I worked in the 'hourly' toddler room overseas in a day care center on base in Okinawa, Japan, and a small daycare center in Texas City, Texas with children ages 6wks to 12 years-old. I also worked in Texas City ISD, in an elementary school as an assistant in the tutorial classroom for regular education P.E./Music/Art rotation, the first grade assistant, and in the Severe and Profound Special Education classroom on that campus. I began working in 1998 for NEISD, first as a substitute, then as an assistant in the PPCD-AU and ALE classrooms.
Education and A Little About Me
I received my degree, Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Special Education in August of 2003, from Texas A&M University- Kingsville at Palo Alto. In November of 2008, I received my Master's in Education with a concentration in Instructional Technology from American Intercontinental University. In the summer of 2016, I completed my GT certification and completed coursework at the doctorate level with a focus on E-Learning. I hold certifications in Special Education, GT, and ESL. I am married with 4 children, 2 who graduated from NEISD magnet programs (STEM and DATA), and 2 children who live out of the city/state. I am a grandmother of my first grandchild and my husband is retired Air Force working at Wilford Hall.
I have taught children, ages 3-12, with diagnoses ranging from severe ID to Mild, Moderate, and Severe Autism, Visual and/or partial Hearing Impairment, and Medically Fragile or with Multiple Disabilities (Severe and Profound). I enjoy the challenge and rewards of working with such a diverse community of learners. Because of their differences in learning, I strive to find new ways to reach, teach, and inspire them to go higher. I believe all children can learn anything and that some may require Special Educational "Services" (Gifted and Talented, 504 Accommodations, Low and High Incidences, Physical, Visual, Behavioral, Auditory, or Speech and Language). Your students' educational needs will be met through teamwork...with you!
