• 2022/2023 Impact Report

Librarian

  • We host 4 preschool story times a year for students that are future BCE Texans. Children and parents come for a story and fun activity stations such as: Oreo spiders, jack-o-lantern magnets, and leaf rubbings.
  • Students were invited to create an ornament representing a storybook for our storybook Christmas tree. Our Texans were able to utilize lots of creativity reflecting upon their favorite books!
  • Students were treated to an author visit with Bridget Heos. She wrote the Mustache Baby book series that our students can’t get enough of and about 100 others! She talked to students about the process of writing a book, getting it published, and persevering!
  • Our library welcomed professional storyteller, Sue Kuentz, to share stories from around the world. Students in each grade level got to hear tales from other cultures across the globe and even participated in some of the storytelling.

Teacher

  • To prepare for author Bridget Heos, the upper grades read Stegothesaurus. We discussed thesauruses, and synonyms, and then students worked to create a Dead Words Graveyard, where we put to rest old words and replaced them with synonyms.
  • Pre-K students read How to Catch an Elf in the library during one of their December library visits. Students completed a STEM challenge to create an elf trap of their own. In this activity students had an opportunity to work on problem solving and peer collaboration as they engineered their own designs.
  • Students learned about hibernation in bears and other animals. They were then tasked with building a den that was large enough for our library bear. While doing this, they had to apply estimation with their problem solving skills to meet the design challenge.
  • Mrs. Morris borrowed an incubator from Region 20 and incubated chicken eggs. Students studied the life cycle of a chicken and witnessed it happen in the library. Students even learned to chicken dance as we celebrated the arrival of our feathered friends.

Lesson Spotlight

Students read the book Make Way for Butterfly in the library. They learned about how bees and butterflies help the ecosystem by pollinating flowers. After discussing pollination, pollinators and why we need to take care of them, students got to pretend to “bee” pollinators in the library using our BeeBots. They learned how to program the robots and then had to program the robot to find its way to the flowers. Students gained a sense of problem solving and collaboration completing the challenges. In addition they incorporated science knowledge!

Collaborator

  • Mrs. Morris collaborated with our family specialist about Lunch & Learns for the year. Mrs. Morris presented about electronic library resources available like Sora, National Geographic Kids, and News-O-Matic.
  • Mrs. Morris worked with ALE teachers to start the Texan Treats Cafe in the library that offers a coffee and beverage service. Students are practicing life skills involved with running a business, and teachers can stop by to find suggested book read alouds and lesson ideas while picking up drinks and treats from the cafe.
  • Mrs. Morris worked with the 2nd grade teachers to prepare and host the Fairy Tale Battle! Students read classic and fractured fairy tales in preparation to battle it out against other 2nd grade classes for the title of champion!
  • Mrs. Morris collaborated with our campus ITS on how to run a private YouTube Live stream for our campus. Our “chicken cam” was a successful collaboration, so our classrooms could check on our eggs in the incubator and had a chance to try and witness the hatchings.

Collaboration Spotlight

Mrs. Morris worked with 1st grade teacher and ELAR representative, Ms. Castro, to plan our first annual BCE Literacy Night. Students and their families were invited for a Read Around the School event and listened to three different stories read by our teachers. Families got to shop the book fair or get ice cream from our ice cream truck!

Campus Leader

  • Mrs. Morris hosted a volunteer orientation in the library for all the PTA library volunteers on September 12, 2022. Our volunteers learned how to sort and shelve books and operate Destiny for circulation. It was a great turnout and recruited 15 volunteers to help!
  • Mrs. Morris presented to our faculty about our newest library resources. At our November faculty meeting, teachers learned all about what News-o-Matic and Culture Grams had to offer, as well as discovering dynamic features of these resources.
  • Mrs. Morris organized Read Across America week in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. She worked alongside PTA to sponsor Read Across BCE where students got to shop from a “mini book fair.” Each student received a book of their choice from PTA!
  • Mrs. Morris attended the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Austin. By attending this conference she was provided with multiple strategies and methods to continue to improve student learning and reading promotion in our school library.
